The Computer Systems Security module is led by Dr. Sarah Benziane (Lectures) and Melle Temmar (Labs), which provides students with a range of experience from the attacker's perspective in order to inform a hands-on development of a system's defense and assessment. The module introduces these security defenses with the foundations of the CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) and Risk Model, followed by extension to the necessary applications in secure Authentication (MFA and salted Hashing using modern algorithms such as Bcrypt) and flexible Access Control (RBAC and configuring system ACLs). Advanced practical topics cover real-world vulnerability assessment through Scanning (Nmap/Nikto), formalized Risk Ranking via CVSS, and the incident response lifecycle. The module culminates in students individually developing a functional security Software Solution as their final assessment; students will have to demonstrate application of theoretical principles through to a practical implementation scheme.
