The course “Hygiene and Safety in the Laboratory”, intended for third-year students specializing in Plant Biotechnology and Genomics, provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and regulations that ensure safe laboratory practice. It familiarizes students with the different types of risks encountered in laboratory environments, emphasizing the importance of proper hygiene, appropriate attire, and the use of personal protective equipment. The course also explores chemical hazards by detailing the classification of products, the distinction between substances and mixtures, their effects on humans and the environment, as well as the essential rules governing their acquisition, storage, transport, and disposal. In addition, students are introduced to good laboratory practices, including risk assessment, equipment maintenance, cleaning, disinfection, and decontamination, along with fundamental concepts in radiation protection and safety measures related to laser use. The module concludes with the management of accidental situations, covering fire detection systems, chemical accident responses, firefighting methods, and evacuation procedures. By completing this course, students develop the knowledge and reflexes required to work safely, responsibly, and efficiently in any laboratory setting.
